| Complete Fertilizer |
Any plant food that contains all three of the primary nutrient elements - nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium - is a complete fertilizer.
|
| Conifer |
Conifer is a more precise word for the plants that bear seeds in cones or modified
conelike structures, such as cedars, cypresses, junipers, and pines. Leaves on most
are narrow and needlelike or tiny and scalelike. Most but not all conifers are
evergreen.
|
| Deciduous |
Any plant that sheds all of its leaves at one time each year (usually in fall) is
deciduous.
|
| Dormant Spray |
An insecticide or a fungicide applied to a plant during the season it is not putting on
new growth is a dormant spray. Usually including, or composed only o, a dormant oil, a
dormant spary is a very effective way to kill overwintering insects and disease organisms
and reduce the necessity for multiple sprays during the growing season.

| Drainage |
Drainage refers to the movement of water through the soil in a plant's root area.
When this happens quickly, the drainage is "good" or "fast" and
the soil is "well drained"; when it happens slowly, the drainage is said to be
"slow" or "bad", and the soil is poorly drained. For plants to
grow, water must pass through the soil. Plants roots need oxygen as well as water,
and soil that remains saturated deprives roots of necessary oxygen.

| Drip Line |
The circle that could be drawn on the soil around a tree directly under the tips of its
outermost branches is called a drip line. Rain water tends to drip from the tree at
this point. The term is used in connection with feeding, watering and grading around
existing trees and shrubs.

| Drought Resistant, Drought Tolerant |
Plants that can withstand long periods with little or no water, plants that have
relatively low water requirements, or plants that are well adapted to the arid West are
often described as drought resistant or drought tolerant. However, because water
requirements vary greatly from plant to plant and from region to region. Soil
conditions, exposure, degree of establishment, length of time without water, and other
factors also affect a plant's water needs, its appearance, and its survival.
