Plant-tone
- Plant-tone is an organic, complete fertilizer that can be
used on almost any type of plant. If ever in doubt, this
is the fertilizer to use!
- Now containing Bio-tone beneficial microbes!
- For optimum results, this product should be applied April 1st,
May 15th, July 4th and October 1st.
- established plants, this fertilizer should be worked into the
soil around the drip line and then watered in thoroughly.
- For new plantings, Plant-tone could be mixed well with the soil
and then back filled into the hole so that it is readily accessible
to the plant or simply broadcast around the dripline after planting.
For new plantings, fertilize at half of the recommended rate.

Holly-tone
- Holly-tone is our recommendation for fertilizer for
acid-loving plants. It is an organic plant food with all
of the essential nutrients.
- Now containing Bio-tone beneficial microbes!
- How is this product different from Plant-tone? Holly-tone
is comprised of 1.9% ammoniacal nitrogen which turns the product
acidic.
- Great for Azaleas, Rhododendron, Dogwoods,
Holly, Mountain Laurel, Blueberries and Pieris.
- For optimum results, this product should be applied April 1st,
May 15th, July 4th and October 1st.
- For established plants, this fertilizer should be worked into
the soil around the drip line and then watered in thoroughly.
- For new plantings, Holly-tone could be mixed well with the soil
and then back filled into the hole so that it is readily accessible
to the plant or simply broadcast around the drip line after
planting. For new plantings, fertilize at half of the
recommended rate.

Rose-tone
- Rose-tone is a long-lasting, slow-release, organic complete
fertilizer specifically designed for roses that will not burn or
leach away. Rose-tone contains organic matter rich in vitamins and
beneficial microbes to improve soil.
- This product is great if you are an organic gardener but we
recommend Bayer's 2-in-1 Rose Care that contains fertilizer
as well as an insecticide for aphids, mites, thrips and rose midges.

 |
Miracle-Gro
- Miracle-Gro releases nitrogen quickly into the soil, which, in
turn, produces quick growth.
- Easy to use in the Miracle-Gro Garden Feeder or with the new
Miracle-Gro Liqua Feed system.
- The downside to this product is that you need to use more of it,
more frequently.
|
 |
Miracle-Gro Liqua Feed
- Patented feeder and convenient ready to use refill bottle system
takes the guesswork out of feeding!
- No mixing, no measuring, no mess
- Automatically applies plant food at an even rate - no worry of
over or under-feeding
- Feeder easily switches between feeding and "water only" options
|
 |
Jack's Classic/Peters 20-20-20
- A water soluble, quick-release, balanced fertilizer best for
annuals.
- Jack's Classic or Peters is better than Miracle-Gro because of
the lower phosphorus.

Osmocote Vegetable & Bedding
- Formulated for plants in-the-ground. It’s 14-14-14
NPK analysis balances vigorous top growth with strong root
development. This makes it appropriate for both annuals and
perennials, season after season. Twice-a-year feeding is recommended
for perennials. The balanced analysis also makes Osmocote® Vegetable
& Bedding a great choice for garden vegetables, tomatoes, melons and
berries.
- Add to soil or mulch in borders and beds, apply regularly to
young trees and shrubs, ideal with tomatoes, garden vegetables,
melons and berries.
- This is one of our favorite fertilizers as it is well-balanced,
slow-release and easy to use. Plus, its fertilizer is actually
coated which increases its slow-release capabilities.

 |
Osmocote Indoor & Outdoor
- Osmocote® Outdoor & Indoor formula is a general-purpose plant
food. It’s one of the few granular fertilizers that’s suitable
for plants in enclosed spaces (pots, hanging baskets, window boxes
and the like). It does not matter if the containers are indoors, on
a screened porch, or outdoors on the patio. Outdoor & Indoor can
also be used with bulbs and roses. Osmocote® provides a four month
controlled supply of major nutrients for colorful blooms and lush
foliage.
- Osmocote® Outdoor & Indoor Plant Food Has Unmatched Versatility:
apply with confidence to potted plants, indoors or outdoors, include
with annuals when planting or transplanting, can use with indoor
plants year-round.
- This formula releases dependent upon soil temperature. The
4-month formula releases best at 70 degree soil temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions:
-
What fertilizer do I use when seeding my lawn?
See Lawn Fertilizers
-
How much Holly-tone or Plant-tone should I use?
Please see the Espoma
website for application instructions. Remember to use only
half of the recommended rate for new plantings.
-
How often should I apply fertilizers?
This is a tough question to answer as some fertilizers need to be
applied every week, every few months, or just once during the
growing season. As a rule of thumb, plants can be fertilized
starting about April 1st then as directed on the product package.
We do not suggest fertilizing trees, shrubs, roses, vines or
perennials during the months of August and September as the plant
will not have time to harden off for the winter. See our
Water & Fertilizer
Schedule for more information.
-
Are fertilizers safe for use around pets and
children?
Most fertilizers, especially organic fertilizers are safe for
use around pets and children. However, some pets can acquire
skin allergies because of these products. If you notice your
pets scratching or biting their skin after being outside after
applying fertilizer, you may want to keep the pets off of those
areas until the fertilizer gets into the soil, about 1-2 days.
-
How do I know which fertilizer to use on which
plant?
This can be tricky but most fertilizers these days will list
what types of plants are best. Most general fertilizers such
as Plant-tone, Miracle-Gro or Peters will work on almost any plant.
However, acid-loving plants would prefer a fertilizer that will
decrease the pH of the soil and increase the amount of acid.
Holly-tone is perfect for plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendron, Dogwoods,
Holly, Mountain Laurel, Blueberries and Pieris.
