As the hot and mostly dry weather continues, it pays for us to be vigilant in the look out for clogged sprinklers and defective electronic valves or some of the stock will suffer even only after one day without water. Some container trees, such as river birch and golden weeping willow, require additional irrigation or hand watering as the amount of transpiration drys them out quickly.
Newly potted perennials and clematis are all watered by hand as there is a danger that they may be over-watered until they begin to root in.
Fortunately, on the more established perennials, the self-watering benches called ebb & flow seem to do the trick as they are watered from the bottom of the pot as the bench fills up with water before it drains out again.
Next year, the old farmhouse next to the road will be 150 years old and may need some renovations to the landscape in addition to some plaster work on the ceiling of a couple of the upstairs bedrooms.

At the end of August will come another shipment of stock including many evergreens such as Green Giant western red cedar and arborvitaes in various sizes along with some dwarf conifers such as Abies koreana ‘Ice Breaker’ that has gorgeous green and white needles and grows very slowly so that it is not likely to become an overgrown problem in the landscape anytime soon.
The Green Giant western red cedars are always a hit for a hedge, screen or windbreak without being damaged by deer or bad winter weather.
A thick screen of Green Giants planted on five foot centers will also dissolve and softens road noise.
Tomorrow is all about lawns on “Ready, Set, Grow” at 8:00 am on 1590 WAKR as Mark Laube from the Oliger Seed Company will share his wealth of knowledge on lawns and grass seed.
Stay tuned as lawn renovation time is coming up in September.
