The Winter Months

The months of November and December are all about poinsettias, trees and the holiday season.

Winter brings a completely different product line to the nursery.  We concentrate our efforts on the holidays which includes growing and fattening poinsettias for our customers and local churches, cutting fresh branches at Galehouse Tree Farm to create our hand-made cemetery blankets and awaiting the delivery of fresh cut Ohio trees, live wreaths and roping to decorate your home with that fresh pine scent.  We also create greens arrangments, porch pots and winter hanging baskets.

Our poinsettias, which have been growing in their back greenhouse since mid-October, are grown primarily for our walk-in customers as well as various local churches and businesses.  Their plants are lush and full from their greenhouse growing system using bottom heat which results in a warm root system for better top growth.  The plants are available in various colors, pot sizes, and price levels.

Although the idea of putting down a live greens arrangement onto a gravesite seems to be very popular in this area, they have found that this concept is not common across the U.S.  Whether you order a grave decoration annually or are ordering for a recently deceased loved one, Dayton’s staff is very helpful and respectful during the order process of such a personal matter.  Dayton’s hand-made grave blankets, pillows and wreaths are made from fresh sprays of spruce and pine along with waterproof ribbons and bows to be sure they last throughout the holiday season.

To decorate your own home, Dayton’s has live wreaths, swags, hanging baskets and garland as well as other bagged and bulk greens to create your own decorations and centerpieces.

In recent years porch pots have become quite popular as a quick and easy way to add long-lasting color to the empty containers around your home.  Our hand-made porch pots are available ready-made or as a kit to create your very own design in your pre-existing pot.

Closing Down

After the holidays wind down, we close the nursery for the entire months of January and February to concentrate on various projects, deep cleaning, remodeling, growing, propagation and a plethora of office work creating and reconciling purchase orders, creating signs for new plants, designing the next year’s color catalog and updates to the ever-changing website.
